Samantha lost her eye when she encountered a bear in the woods in 1995.

@Saeed: Thank you, Saeed.
Aww thats sad, I'm amazed tho that a cat took on a bear. Cute capture!
11 Jun 2008 2:48am
@Brian: Actually, the bear took her on... swatted her into a tree or something else immovable, and that's how she lost her eye. But she lived to tell about it!
Actually, she "once" caught a mouse in the house... years ago! She was so proud!

Good thing she has 9 lives! Sounds like quite a cat! You captured her well!
11 Jun 2008 5:39am
@Craig: I think she used all nine of them that day!
She looks content! She was lucky.
11 Jun 2008 6:11am
@Anita: She was very lucky!
Awww! bless her, she's a beautiful and very brave little lady.
11 Jun 2008 6:12am
@MaryB: The sad part is that she LOVED to be outside, even in snow... but after that she had to stay in. Vet said she had no depth perception and couldn't defend herself... plus, after that everything outside terrified her.
Still a cute cat - did you ever try to give her a patch and see if she would act like a pirate? I wonder how many of her lives she used up with that bear encounter....
11 Jun 2008 6:14am
@Chris: Oh, a patch... wouldn't that make another great shot! :-)
Beautiful Samantha - it looks as though she still has eight of her nine lives!
11 Jun 2008 6:16am
@Judy: She had beautiful eyes, she's still beautifu to me!
a sad but interesting story. Love the detail!

@Michael Skorulski: Thanks, Michael.. not too sad, she's had a great life since then!
Oh, what a brave kitty. And I agree with Judy. How terrible a time that must have been.
@Viewfinder: When it happened, yes... my son was 17 at the time, and he helped me get her to the vet, which luckily was only two miles away!
Now that is a survivor! I had a Samantha cat once too! She is beautiful!

@Tracey: Thank you, Tracey.
Bit of an unfair fight!

@Alun Lambert: All my cats stay in the house now... cars, bears, I want them to be safe!
A bear...!! Unbelievable. As others have said, thank goodness for the 9 lives!
11 Jun 2008 7:47am
You think it was one of the bears that is living in the woods now? Or one of the ancestors? Pretty picture grandma!
11 Jun 2008 8:04am
@Sammi: Don't go in the woods, Sammi!!!
oh my gosh, you must have been heartbroken, it's so hard to bear when they suffer, thank God she had you to look out for her, I'd want to cuddle her all the time, she's beautiful :) poor sweetheart
11 Jun 2008 8:14am
@Lorraine: The whole thing was heartbreaking, she was perfectly fine when I came home from work, and 1/2 hour later she crawled up on the deck... injured. But she came through it and has been a wonderful pet!
aww poor kitty , she is a cutie though !

Such a shame, but at least she is still here with you..!

A brave cat, to fight with a bear!
11 Jun 2008 9:22am
I must say that she is a lucky cat to have only lost an eye.

Big mean horrible bear. Poor Sammi, what an awful experience for both of you. No wonder she is afraid to go out. Our kitties are so much safer when kept inside. I can tell that she is well loved and well taken care of. She is a beauty and she does have beautiful eyes. She reminds me of my Cleo which I will have to post some pictures of.

@Marion: I would love to see photos of Cleo!

@Peter Miller: Thank you, Peter.
Thats a shame for her, but I bet her one good eye is still sharper than mine.

@Richard_Irwin: Mine, too!! :-)
Only one eye but a lot of love from you i'm sure, and only that is irreplaceable.
