This rather large black bear was enjoying the apples in our neighbor's orchard yesterday.

@Observing: Yes, it concerns us very much... especially when they are this big. I have been living with more and more black bears since 1995. We just have to be very aware of our surroundings and careful when we step outside.

Seems to be quite big for a Black Bear! Here we don't see them so often as they still have lots of space....

I love black bears. I'm more terrified of the rabid raccoons than of bears. I've had many close encounters with both. A bear will generally run; raccoons stand their ground and growl, scream, or otherwise let you know you're in their way (not the other way around).

That must be one fantastic thing to witness. Bears died out here several hundred years back, so its something i have never seen.

@Marion: Yes, they do. More often than deer! A forester that lives down the road (he has a bear den on his property) stated that there are 18 bears here on our mountain... that they know of! Since spring, we have seen 12 different bears at different times! This one was really large and a great concern!
